HASTELLOY B3 (ALLOY B3, 2.4600, UNS N10675)

This Nickel-Molybdenum alloy has excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations from ambient to high temperatures. It is also resistant to sulfuric, acetic, formic and phosphoric acids and other non-oxidizing environments. Hastelloy B-3 also has excellent resistance to pitting corrosion and stress-corrosion and cracking. Hastelloy B-3 is not recommended in the presence of ferric or copper salts.

KEY FEATURES OF HASTELLOY B3

Hastelloy B3 shows exceptional resistance to HCl and H2SO4. The Hastelloy B-3 alloy (UNS N10675) exhibits extremely high resistance to pure hydrochloric, hydrobromic and sulfuric acids. In addition, the structural stability is significantly improved compared to previous B-type alloys, and is easier to weld and process. Hastelloy B3, like other nickel alloys (in annealed condition), is ductile, shaped and weldable, and the stress in chloride bearing solutions is resistant to corrosion. It can also withstand fluoride-bearing media and concentrated sulfuric acid that damage zirconium alloys. Alloy B-3 alloy is available in the form of plate, sheet, strip, billet, rod, wire, pipe, tube and coated electrodes. Many are used in the chemical process industry.

HASTELLOY B3 CORROSION RESISTANCE

One of the characteristics of the nickel alloys is that the chloride technology is resistance to stress corrosion. The corrosion resistance of the materials was tested while boiling in 45% magnesium chloride (ASTM Standard G 36). Hastelloy B3, Hastelloy C-276 and Inconel 625 are comparatively better leaders than austenitic stainless steels. Tests after 1.008 hours (six weeks)

Alloy Cracking corrosion time
316L 2 h
254SMO 24 h
Inconel 625 No cracking after 1008 hours
Hastelloy C-276 No cracking after 1008 hours
Hastelloy B-3® No cracking after 1008 hours

HASTELLOY B3 WELDING AND PRODUCTION

Hastelloy B3 alloy, Gas Metal Arc (GMA / MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc (GTA / TIG) and Shielded Metal Arc (SMA / Stick) welding process is very suitable.

The forged products of the Hastelloy B3 alloy are supplied in the annealed state unless otherwise stated. This solution is designed to make the annealing procedure best suited to the corrosion and ductility of the alloy. After all hot forming processes, the material is re-annealed to recover the optimum properties. Hastelloy B3 is re-annealed to give an outer fiber elongation of 7% or more after any cold forming process. The annealing temperature for Hastelloy B3 alloy is 1066 ° C (1950 ° F) and water cooling is recommended (rapid air cooling can be applied in structures thinner than 10 mm (0.375 in)) Waiting time at annealing temperature Depending on the thickness of the structure ( 10-30 minutes is recommended.

While cold work does not generally affect the resistance of the Hastelloy B3 alloy to general corrosion, stress can affect resistance to corrosion cracking. For optimum corrosion performance, it is important that the cold-machined parts are re-annealed.
